halloween 2010

November 2nd, 2010

to the voyeurs:  i am sorry but no, i do not have any photos from halloween this year (yet).  i was a bit camera shy.  to work on friday i did wear something that other people would probably call a costume, but for me it didn’t feel like a costume.  i dress like that many weekends.  then, friday night we did a very non-halloweeny thing (although, for a dive bar, The Avenue on Telegraph is totally decorated to the nines for halloween! gold stars for whoever did that!) and went home.

i spent saturday afternoon spraypainting this ridiculous huge princess dress (think Glinda the Good Witch size/style) i got at a theatre costume sale a couple of years ago.  originally, the dress, for reasons i still have yet to fathom, was bright Mountain Dew neon yellow-green.  i assume this must’ve looked good under stage lighting at some point.  despite hating the color, it’s a beautifully handmade and well-constructed dress and it fit, so i bought it.  it has been worn by other people, but not me, because i hated the color.  so finally, saturday i pulled the cans of black spraypaint leftover from painting LAST year’s vintage dress off the shelf and spent a good long while spraying that huge thing black.  TURNS OUT, satin and tulle absorb spraypaint like CRAZY.  i used 2.5 cans of black on that dress and it still wasn’t totally blackened (my right forearm, however, is STILL SORE from holding down the can nozzle.  how do taggers do it?) and afterward, with the neon green still kind of showing through, it looked sort of like a princess who narrowly escaped a firey burning castle. the color it was a little too smokey/matte, so then i found the spray glue and added some glitter. BLAMMO!  done.

we went to a private warehouse party in SoMa and i wore my black veil and some black gloves and went out that night as a Black Widow, for which some wasted pirate dude happily made me a black spider balloon animal to carry around with me. unfortunately, this huge satin dress was also INCREDIBLY HOT and i think i lost 5 lbs in water weight inside that warehouse party. i eventually had to change out of it to even be able to breathe. it was a pretty chill party, and i noted after making the trip to the car and back for the costume change that the streets of SF were MUCH CRAZIER OUTSIDE than our party inside. AMATEUR NIGHT in full effect, holy crap.  slutty nurses falling all over curbs everywhere. we had a good time and went home and went to bed at a reasonable hour (3am?).

sunday was sunny and warm and GORGEOUS and i did kind of want to go to the annual awesome renegade dawn-to-dusk party picnic in SF (brasstax), but that would’ve required getting our shit together earlier and preparing for a whole day out and about, in costume, which we didn’t feel like.  instead we went for a really long walk from our place to lake merritt, had lunch and some cocktails on the dock at the Lake Chalet, walked back, and then got ready to ride the TransportedSF halloween bus, for which Obi-J was playing a set.

for this venture, i wore another dress that isn’t quite a costume and some white/undead make-up. the halloween bus was funtimes, although no spooky sites were visited this year. just gorgeous panoramic views of the ocean and SF and the golden gate bridge on a glorious moonless night and i had one of those moments where i was standing on the edge of the pacific ocean with beautiful music and beautiful people and feeling absolutely ALIVE. <3

all in all, a much toned-down halloween for us this year. no up-all-night/sleep-all-day totally crazy parties, but still got in lots of funtimes with friends and with all those extra awake-during-daylight hours also got to enjoy the gorgeous autumn. i count that as a WIN.
