evolver

March 30th, 2006

i mentioned that some photographs of me recently appeared in the zero issue of Evolver magazine in an article about hooping, starring my friends Philo (the overlord) and Christabel (hoopgirl), two of the hoopers we practice with every sunday, and Kandice Korves (holistic.hooping), concluding with a “DIY” section by Jason Strauss!

philo gave me a copy and jay scanned the magazine, and you can download/read the article in PDF here (1.7 MB): jayober.com. it’s not on newstands yet, but it will be soon, so look for it! it’s a GORGEOUS magazine, as you can see by our excerpted pages. please check it out, and if you’re impressed, contact evolver to give them some feedback on their first issue, and you can also submit work of your own.

about the evolver project:
“It’s no longer about knowing what’s wrong. It’s about becoming what’s right. It’s about integrating logic and heart, vision and will. It’s about making life juicier by making good ideas real.”

the other kind of hoop dreams

March 27th, 2006

the LA times reports on hooping,
starring Anah, aka Hoopalicious, the biggest “hooperstar” i know and a definite role model for me.

choice quotables:

“With her hair in ponytails, a dusting of glitter around her eyes and a giant hula hoop swirling hypnotically around her tiny, washboard-waist, Reichenbach (aka “Hoopaliscious”) is your childhood friend all grown up and ready to go clubbing.”

“Before the class started, Reichenbach explained the two basic schools of hula hooping. There is circus-style, which involves multiple hoops and tricks. Then there is “hoop-dance,” which has tricks too, but the focus is on the dancing. Within hoop-dance, she explained, are the followers of the Colorado jam band String Cheese Incident, who use bigger hoops and have a hippie bluegrass style, and her own style of hooping, which incorporates electronic music and break dance-type moves.

“It’s like they are hooping on opium,” she said of the String Cheese followers, whereas “My style is like hooping on speed….”

i think my style is a combination – i don’t do a lot of tricks, and usually am just dance-hooping, focusing more on the flow and looking graceful than doing the superdifficult jumpthroughs, tosses, and passes, but definitely not slow like the SCI/jamband contingent tends to be. there are some more hoop happenings and news around here, and i’ll get to them soon enough. starting in april, jay and i will most likely be working with a close-knit group of bay area hoopers to form a sort of performance troupe and actually get some method/routine down…. who knows where that might go, but after more than 3 years of hooping practice under my ….pants (i don’t wear belts), i’m definitely eager to take it to another level. i think.

anyway, good article. one of the best on hooping i’ve read recently, as other articles that have come out recently have liked to pinhole hooping into either another aerobics fad or as part of underground culture (like the recent Spin article that talked about hooping as part of “satanic lust rituals”….) that’s not accessible to everyone, and Anah definitely does a good job of blending those two into an interesting, fun, sexy, creative but accessible hobby.

the hoopers

December 23rd, 2005

a funny little thing

some people jay and i recently met referred to us as “the hoopers”
to someone else,
and that person thought that was our name
as in
“The Hoopers” – Amy & Jay Hooper.

maybe we should change our names? it would be easier that way.

my friend Reagan (pronounced “RE-gan”, not “RAY-gan”, who i met for the first time in NYC last winter (via Tribe) and then again on the playa and now she lives in West Oakland, yay!) made a pretty bitchin’ fire hooping video. check that girl out. she gots mad skillz with that thing. i’d totally set myself on fire if i tried to do any of that.

hooping.org film festival

October 25th, 2005

The 2005 Hooping.org Film Festival is here! if you’ve wondered how widespread hooping is, are looking for some tips on moves you’ve seen others do, or want to learn some new ones, check out all these homemade shorts starring hoopers from across the US and Canada (including Jay’s Bay Area Hoopers video). i’m a big fan of Yoga Hooping myself, and Kara from Eugene, OR has a great little video demonstrating some of those moves. many thanks to Rob for pulling it all together!

as noted, check out hooping.org’s video archives as well for more hooping videos – instructional and performance.

Sean Cole of NPR did a several minute segment on the resurgence of hooping (mostly focused on SCI, but not all) on 10/18. take a listen:

BAH in action

September 21st, 2005

my boyfriend is so smart. not only does he take awesome photos and put them into pretty galleries online, he learns how to use all these newfangled electronics inventions and if it weren’t for him i’d probably have an AM radio and no t.v. and no computer at home and would sit around singing to myself.

one of the cool things he recently learned was how to shoot and edit video with our digicam. this past sunday he took video of our weekly hooping gathering and has put it all together with some wicked awesome special effects and nice music.

Bay Area Hoopers 9/18/05 (14 MB WMV file)

it’s too bad that some of us (me) were really sleepy because we’d been at the D-L until 9:00 that morning and couldn’t muster the energy to hoop for the camera, but everyone else looks really good. i think the stars of BAH are definitely the boys in this one. go hoopers!

hooprack

August 25th, 2005

for any of you hooping readers out there, check out what jay built to carry our hoops on our bikes around burning man. he’s so handy! last year it was a real PITA to transport my hoops, and i ended up just leaving them at our camp and not taking them out anywhere or joining many of the hoopenings. i really missed out on a lot, but this year we are going full force and the hoop carrier is really going to help!

in other hooping news, after our SECOND 2.5 hour fire-hoop-making session, they are still not finished but are really, really close – a lot of work for something that looks fairly simple. not having the proper tools or pieces also hindered the process quite a bit. i think we’ll finish them tonight after work, and light up sometime after dark…..

“Power and Glory”, by ray caesar

the name of the exhibition for which this image is a centerpiece is “Tools of Perversity”

this image has been showing up in tribe.net profiles and was recently posted by Vera on hooping.org. you can see why it’s so popular, and i hope the artist doesn’t mind that it’s being proliferated by hoopers around the world. i assume that since the full image is online, he must not mind so much. if i had the money i would love to buy the gicleé print (18″ x 24″). i really like the rest of his work as well – hauntingly beautiful, as they say.

read about his very interesting and intricate method of digital creation.
