notes from yesterday on language and signs (which i need to start doing more frequently, and lucky you i might as well hit publish.)

[indirect language and the voices of silence: merleau-ponty]

hypertext culture: texting as a language of disembodied signs – now you really can have invisible friends!

how are you a symbol of yourself? – are selves constellations of symbols? (character masks, avatars, etc.)

expression (in various forms and language) is the key to doors opened only from within. yet: all language is indirect.

{the spaces around you will speak you} -

language expresses as much by what is between words, by what is not said as by the words themselves.

-it is in the spaces in between that i am listening for what i don’t want to hear.-

and speaking by means of silence:  the power of being able to not speak – silence is the discourse of the Master. not speaking is sovereignty (esp. political. the right to silence. to not be forced to disclose. see: Pentagon.) (all words are political / Habermas)

[With every word an overstatement, silence is then worn like dark sunglasses: don't read me.]

vs.  the power of being able to speak – free speech, the power to express without restriction

{as always in art, one must lie to tell the truth. – sartre} — the poet lies, the painter lies, and in that lie is the truth.  how does Kant’s correspondence theory work if truth is often contrary to the experience of reality, and empirical facts are clearly not always truth?

the “lived perspective” — see Cezanne’s Doubt - of things does not match the empirical perspective. (the geometric is uncanny, we do not see things in solid forms, our vision shifts, our senses are faulty and our brain constructs the rest.)

if you tell the truth straight you’re not considering other people where they are, and then it becomes a lie. (recently on the problem of truth: see: jodi dean/ows conversation )
