Though, I can think of one instance in which she asked for space, got it and then used it to ream him in a pretty nasty divorce. That saying "All's fair in love and war" isn't a very good mantra. That said, I really like the idea of making love not as disposable as our society has deemed it. Sometimes people just need a little space to get through something on their own.
