watch
a few of the non-documentary films i’ve watched recently that were unexpectedly good, and that i recommend:
Henry Poole Is Here . creative storyline, great script, well acted. dealt with things that are difficult to process (terminal illness, tramautized children, faith) in a really delicate yet direct and darkly humorous way. it made me cry.
In Bruges – did not know what this movie was before i started watching it, and i would’ve passed it over reading the descriptions of it online (hitmen, violence, guns, etc.). however: excellent script, great direction, and well acted (even colin farrell). it’s a little weird to have subtitles when people are speaking english (with thick accents), but i think it helped a lot, because the writing is brilliant.
Weirdsville – it’s better than you would think given the plot summary.
Romance & Cigarettes – it’s a musical. by the Coen brothers. the music is all your favorite classic rock hits, the plot and script is as gritty as you would expect from them, and the acting/singing/dancing is superb.
13 Conversations about 1 Thing – given that the 1 thing is “happiness”, i didn’t expect this film to be so dark. but it was, and i liked that.
Humboldt County – sort of a humboldt version of the graduate. reminded me a lot of home. the social commentary is a bit weary, but it plays out well.
Cold Mountain – i know this movie got nominated for lots of awards and such when it came out, but it’s usually not my type of film (historical drama) and so i never watched it until just recently, but now i keep returning to it in my mind. i think i like nicole kidman more than i admit, because i also really loved Fur (An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus), and Dogville still sort of haunts me.
Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead – like In Bruges, usually not my type of flick with the guns and violence etc, but i’m willing to watch almost anything with Philip Seymour Hoffman, and this turned out to be better than expected (esp. considering Ethan Hawke.)
