China bans thin plastic bags.

i wish the U.S. would do the same. here’s an older Salon.com article about the plastic bag problem here in Oakland and the US.

i feel more and more that all petroleum based plastics are evil (thoug bags are defifinitely some of the worst). im still a little conflicted (and probably underinformed) but i wish more plastics would be made out of corn. reading about the north/west=great pacific gyre being overrun with plastic that only photodegrades is more than a little freaky. of course, it’s not economical to use corn in this way, and perhaps even eat it, since it has more than doubled in price in the last 2 years ( www.post-gazette.com/pg/08011/848329-28.stm ).

the more research i do the more everything seems to be intertwined and the more i think that the solution to everything from air and water pollution to food costs hinges on an effective (meaning cost and environmental impact) way to generate, transport, and store energy. right now i think the best promise of a trickle down solution is with toshiba and their lithium ion silicon nanocrystal batteries ( www.gizmag.com/toshiba-scib-super-charge-lithium-battery/8506/ ) and the super soaker guy’s claims that he has a solar/fuel cell hybrid that is 60% efficient ( www.physorg.com/news119107136.html ).

i mostly hope that people haven’t started taking notice of these things too late – www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/12/13/tech/main3613698.shtml

the bags are probably made in china…along with everything else…since they have stopped using them, does this mean they’ll stop making them?
