can’t you smell it, how volatile life is?

December 21st, 2007

i just watched what i think is probably the best film i have ever seen:

Sedmikrasky (aka “Daisies”): www.netflix.com/Movie/Daisies/70023491 / www.imdb.com/title/tt0060959/

“In this landmark, Czech new wave film, two young women (Jitka Cerhová and Ivana Karbanová) see a self-indulgent world where traditional values are meaningless and opt to forgo any pretense of standards. Donning matching outfits and penciling on raccoon-eye makeup, they embark on a series of freewheeling adventures — including staged dinner dates with old men and destroying a banquet hall — all enhanced by Jaroslav Kucera’s creative camera work.”

it reminded me of what might have happened if vera and i took too much acid and were set loose on eastern europe 40 years ago. it’s sort of like laverne and shirley meet the dinner banquet acid trip scene from “Hair”. the aesthetic is completely in line with how i dream. the fashions are sublime (1966) and i am now totally in love with Ivana Karbanová, who was only in a few other obscure czech films but her face was somehow instantly familiar and amazingly beautiful.

you probably have to be as weird as me and love weird aesthetic-centric indie films without plots to like this sort of thing, but i’m putting it out there as a film worthy of viewing for anyone if you can make it through. jay immediately said WTF? and fell asleep, but i just finished watching it and want to watch it again and/or have it shown in the background of many many parties. filled with images of food-obsession, simulated castration, and high new wave fashion, i particularly suggest this for my female friends who love subversive female art.
