love, politics and fashion

March 19th, 2007

this past weekend was special and exhausting in numerous ways.

friday right after work we sprinted to get ready for f’kir and anastazia’s so-not-even-close-to-traditional “wedding”. i don’t even think it’s fair to try to describe this event to those who weren’t witnesses, but i will say that it was mostly a butoh performance involving palpable angst and tension, sweaty flesh, tongues, bondage, submission, drums, chanting, arias, singing bowls and ecstastic writhing passion, all combined with direct beams of unadulterated cosmic love shooting from the bride and groom’s eyes. i was surprised there was no bloodletting, actually, given the macabre nature of butoh. the reception included a cabaret in which we learned that the secret to meditation is focusing on your ass, and there was considerable discussion about what, exactly, the bride and groom meant when they referred to themselves as elves. everyone was dressed beautifully in black and white, as requested, and there were good breaks/glitch/IDM DJs (including the groom, who played a GREAT set) and we danced until the wee hours of the morning. it was definitely the most authentic wedding i’ve ever attended in terms of the bride&groom doing exactly what they wanted to do to express themselves and their love and not letting tradition or what other people think get in the way.

saturday, we got up late and went to downtown oakland to see barack obama, which was more or less a canned campaign speech about how much he loves oakland and how much oakland loves him, with lots of talk about making big changes and how his inexperience in washington is a good thing because he’s not jaded yet. it was a beautiful day and i would’ve gone no matter who the candidate speaking was; i’m definitely not on the Obama ’08 bandwagon yet. it seemed like most people there were more impressed with the 10,000 person crowd and getting really into the whole “herd” mindset, oooohing and aaahhhing about “look how long this line is!” (referring to the 5+ block long line to get into the gated area where the speech took place), which i guess makes people feel like they’re really part of something. i think people have this weird love/hate relationships with lines and crowds in that way. we hate standing in lines and being in crowds, but it also gives you this twisted sense of belonging, like you must be doing something right, cuz everyone else is doing it too. obama’s definitely got a lot of support here in the bay area, but right now i still give him just a little more than a snowball’s chance in hell of winning the election.

after that was over i went into SF to get ready for a fashion show @ the Opel 5-year anniversary party @ Mighty in SF, modeling for local designers medium.reality, green.girl, and miranda.caroligne.

the best of Mark’s shots from my three changes:
in medium reality+green girl (bad posture! yikes!)
hooping in green girl’s red pleather (below ; LOVE the red pleather)
in miranda’s coat and medium reality’s royal accessories
me & jay afterward.

i had to change pretty fast backstage as there were only a couple of minutes between each designer, and afterward someone said that if i had a superhero power, that would be it: changes wardrobe in the blink of an eye. after the fashion show the bar was super hot and crowded and i was pretty tired so we hung around on the comfy lounge bus parked outside until 2:00a or so, and then went home.

sunday we slept in a bit and then went to brunch and then i went jogging on a beautiful sunny afternoon and then we went to berkeley and got hair cuts and then into SF for 2 meetings to help plan 2 outdoor music events this summer that are going to be super fun. disco camping season is almost here!

and then last night jay got the flu and got really sick in the middle of the night and now i also feel not so good. i have a lot of things i want to do this week in addition to work, jay is playing @ 1015 on friday night and then saturday is ALCHEMY, the big visual art/music/fashion event we’re involved in which will take up all of Saturday. i don’t have time to be sick. i have too much fun to do.
