grāpple?!

February 22nd, 2007

joshua’s post about disney sponsored tomatoes reminded me of the weirdest thing i saw at the grocery store the other day:

GrāpplesĀ®, the grape flavored apples

I LOVE APPLES. a good organic fuji apple is perhaps the world’s perfect food. i am thus almost personally offended by the idea that a good, natural apple is in need of some artificial flavoring to make it appealing to kids. so, now, parents and the food industry have resigned to the fact that since kids “don’t like” raw natural fruits as snacks, let’s get away from those gelatinous, “fruit-flavored” subsitutes like Fruit Rollups, since obviously THAT’S what’s making kids fat (not lifestyle issues), and take ACTUAL fruit and inject it with whatever the hell “natural flavors” are and make it taste nothing like an actual apple.

With childhood obesity increasing at alarming rates, GrāppleĀ® brand apples could go a long way to improving the eating habits of children and introducing them to more produce.

bullshit. Grāpples are doing nothing more than teaching kids yet again that natural, raw, whole foods just aren’t delicious enough to eat on their own. this is not “training kids to like fruit”. this is training kids to like a different kind of processed junk. gah!!
