flexisexual

here’s a good one, via vegan porn: “flexitarian” – a meat-eating vegetarian.

the term applies to those people who eat 90% vegetable-based diets, full of whole grains, fruits and vegetables and organic produce and soy, but who also include organic, free-range meats.

that’s just someone eating a healthy diet. jay, for example, is a flexitarian, as are the majority of my friends and co-workers. in fact, that’s most of the people i know in the Bay Area. people here get seriously upset if there isn’t free-range meat on a restaurant menu.

i understand that giving this diet a specific label may for some people be useful when they’re trying to explain why they won’t eat at Burger King, but it just makes it all the more confusing: vegan, vegetarian, ovo-lacto vegetarian, pescetarian, and now flexitarian? jeesh. but then again, it now has it’s own meaning, so when you read it or someone tells you that’s what they are, you’ll know what they mean, right? language is self-destructive that way; once a word has meaning, there’s no taking it back, even if it just makes things more confusing.

the VeganPorn entry mentions that with all these new ambiguous, cross-defining words, a Flexitarian Metrosexual is then a truly confusing person. or are they flexisexual? here in San Francisco we have a hell of a lot of Flexitarian Metrosexuals, and it all gets VERY confusing around here.

*Yawn* Labels are so out of control right now. To assume that every freak off the street is going to know and accept this label is ridiculous. I always thought that a flexisexual is a body-builder who likes to get nas-tee. If somebody told me they were a flexitarian I would laugh in their pretentious faces. I mean, I am one of those, but would die before I stuck that label on myself. Labels are for cans!

Then there’s “freegan”. People who refuse to buy dairy products but will eat them if they don’t have to pay.

i even have friends who are Freegans that will eat ANYTHING as long as they don’t have to pay – or, say, a party is catered or something and there’s meat on the buffet, they’ll eat it because the animal is already dead and the food will be thrown away if no one eats it.

Yeah, I am freegan. Give me some food. Hell, I want everthing free. Give me some rad Irregular Choice kitty shoes and some sparkly barettes so I won’t have to leave me house to get them and a new skirt…
