i don't believe i ever said i expected anyone to speak english in thailand, nor do i have the attitude that people all over the world should learn in order to make it easier to cater to tourists. i just said they didn't and it make it hard for us since we don't speak thai.

before you made this comment, did you happen to look at the rest of this blog? this, for example?

i loved thailand and would love to go back. anyone's first time abroad is full of unexpected things, and having to navigate without speaking the language proved difficult, but doable. that was my only point. just because i note they don't speak english doesn't mean i think they SHOULD.

i hate it when people read one post and then decide to make stupid comments - usually just insulting comments like the one here, nothing actually worth saying - without reading anything else. if anyone's narrow minded, it's you, johnny mark.

So much moaning about lack of this, lack of that, it's a wonder you even bother going abroad.

Here's a tip, learn some basic Thai before arriving.

It's sooo condescending to expect the locals to know English, doncha think?

Guess not.

Wow -- Thank you for sharing, Amy! And what an ending! Now you've got me itching for the road, darnit...

Not nearly as dramatic: I spent my last day in Thailand running around trying to get a permit to leave with a Buddha statue I had bought.... Like you, I suceeded, and love this Buddha all the more for it. :-)
